Portia Diwa, a talented young harpist, plays traditional Celtic, Latin, and Classical music as well as Meditative, Contemporary, and original compositions on a 36 stringed neo-Celtic lever harp by Jerry Goldsberrry and 26 string "Harpsicle" harp by William Rees. Portia began her harp career at age 9 and has been actively performing in the Bay Area ever since. Her experiences in performing started with the "Fantastic Five Harpers" and grew to large audiences in places throughout Norther California with the "Bay Area Youth Harp Ensemble" as well as "Pleiades Ensemble" where she became a soloist as well as a composer and arranger of ensemble music. Portia taught and directed the "Mission Harp Ensemble" in San Francisco with Diana Stork for several years. Portia also taught the "Bahia Vista Harp Ensemble" at Bahia Vista Elementary School in San Rafael for 3 years. The goal of both of these ensembles was to provide underprivileged inner-city youth with access to harp lessons, to help them in their emotional, social and intellectual growth through the beauty and healing properties of the harp. The "Bay Area Youth Harp Ensemble," "Mission Harp Ensemble," and "Bahia Vista Harp Ensemble" are sponsored by the Multi-Cultural Music Fellowship. Visit www.multiculturalmusicfellowship.org to see the Festival of Harps 20th Anneversary Video, which includes some beautiful video footage of Portia's hands.
